Alexander McBeath was born in Scotland ca 1760. He served in the 73rd regiment of the British Army and was wounded in 1780 at the battle of Pollilur during the Second Mysore War. He was an out-pensioner of Chelsea Hospital. Alexander married Christian Gun(n) of Dallagan on 12 Feb. 1791. He was described as a tenant in Liribul. The Scottish Old Parish Registers contain birth records for nine children: John, Grizzel, Margaret, Girzzel [sic], Mary, Roderick, Robert, Adam and Morrison. (1) Alexander and Christian came to Red River in 1815 with eight children: Margaret, Molly (Mary), George, Christian, Roderick, Robert, Adam, and Morrison. The McBeath family fled to Jack River after Seven Oaks in 1816, and when they returned to Red River in 1817, Alexander McBeath was granted lot #3 (Fidler’s survey) by Lord Selkirk. Alexander later gave up this lot so that a church (St. John’s) and school could be built on the property. He took land further north on the Red River. He died at the settlement in 1848; his wife died in 1853. They are buried in St. John’s Churchyard.

Janet (Jean) Polson-3510, widow of Hugh Matheson, emigrated from Kildonan, Sutherlandshire, in 1815. She was 60 years of age and headed a party of three: herself, her daughter Helen, and John Matheson (son of Alexander Matheson of Coirag and his first wife). Also on board the Hadlow were two sons and another daughter: Alexander with his wife and family; Angus and his wife; Catherine with her husband Alexander Polson and their children. (1) Another son, John, had been in the 1813 group. An older daughter, Janet, immigrated in 1823.

John Sutherland (52), his wife Christy (45) and their family sailed on the Prince of Wales for Red River in 1823. (1) This family was originally from Kildonan, Sutherlandshire, although they were living in Latheron, Caithness, at the time they emigrated. The Old Parish Registers record the marriage of John Sutherland, Soldier, of Balnavaliach, and Christy Sutherland, Dalvate, on 29 March 1795. The OPRs also include the births of five children: John (1796), George (1800), Katherine (1803), Margaret (1805) and Alexander (1808). The ship’s passenger list shows that John and Christy were accompanied by three children: Kate, Margaret and Alexander. Also on board the ship were John Sutherland, age 27, and his wife Betty. The passenger list does not indicate that John was a son of John and Christy, but it is probable. George Sutherland did not leave Scotland at that time; however, a man named George Sutherland came to the settlement in 1830, (2) and it is possible that he was their son. He married Henrietta Gunn in 1837.

John Sutherland, born 1808 in Caen, Sutherlandshire, was the son of Robert Sutherland and Janet Matheson-3511. (1) He immigrated to Red River with his widowed mother in 1823. Janet sailed on the Prince of Wales and John was a passenger on the Eddystone, which sailed in convoy with the Prince. (2) The Eddystone carried a small group of men and boys for York Factory and the Colony who were transferred to the Prince of Wales in Hudson Strait. This arrival date is corroborated by his scrip application, in which he stated that he had arrived at Red River in 1823.
