MARTIN JORDAN (15709)

Martin Jordan, a 16-year-old from Killala, County Mayo, Ireland, sailed on the Edward and Ann in 1811 (1) with a group of labourers bound for Lord Selkirk’s settlement. Led by Miles Macdonell, they were to prepare for the 1812 settlers. The ship’s arrival at York Factory was too late in the year for the men to make the trip to Red River, so they wintered at a camp on the Nelson River.

JOHN INKSTER (1407)

John Inkster was born in Orkney about 1799. He joined the Hudson’s Bay Company as a stonemason in 1821, but bought out of the service early to settle at Red River. On 20 Jan 1826 he married Mary Sinclair, daughter of William Sinclair (6443) and Margaret (Nahovway) Norton. They first settled on the east side of the Red River. They later moved to the west side of the river, onto land owned by John’s uncle James Inkster.(1)  In the late 1830s or early 40s, John purchased a lot adjoining his uncle’s land. (2) This lot was not far from the seven oak trees which marked the site of the 1816 Battle of Seven Oaks, and the house which Inkster constructed there in the 1850s was named Seven Oaks. John and Mary had a family of eleven children.

ALEXANDER MATHESON of COIRAG (2608)

Alexander Matheson of Coirag was born ca 1773 in Scotland. He married Ann Matheson about 1795 and they had five children whose births were recorded in the Kildonan parish registers: John, Ann, James, William and George. William is not mentioned in later records, so he probably died in Scotland.  Ann Matheson must have died shortly after her last child was born, as Alexander married Jane/Jean Matheson of Aultbreakachy in 1810. Parish records show that they had three children: Hugh, Angus, and Ann (Nancy). There is a definite possibility that Alexander’s second wife was a daughter of Hugh and Jean (Polson) Matheson-3510.

GEORGE MUNROE (308)

George Munroe was born in Sutherland, Scotland, about 1797. On January 4, 1821, George married Ann Matheson-309, daughter of Alexander and Ann Matheson of Coirag. The marriage registration gives his residence as Blarich [Bl’airich], Parish of Rogart. The couple apparently made their home in Coirag, as this is the residence given in the Old Parish Registers for the births of their three children – Robert, Alexander, and Ann.  In 1830, the family left Scotland for the Selkirk Settlement. The couple had four more children at Red River – James, Frances, Marion, and John. In 1851, with the arrival of a Presbyterian minister to the settlement, George was chosen by ballot as one of the six elders for the new Kildonan Church. George died on 6 March 1864, and Ann on 14 October 1865. They are both buried in Kildonan Presbyterian churchyard, Winnipeg.
