GEORGE SUTHERLAND (18390)

George Sutherland was born in Scotland ca 1800. In 1830 he sailed on the Prince Rupert as a colonist for the Red River Settlement. (1,2) Seven years after his arrival, he married Henrietta Gunn, daughter of John and Ann Gunn, who had arrived in the settlement in 1823. (3) The Sutherlands farmed in Kildonan and had a family of twelve. George died in 1880 at the age of 80. Henrietta, who was 20 years younger than her husband, died in 1904.

It is not definitely known to which family of Sutherlands George was connected. He was not the son of John Sutherland and Catherine Grant as had been previously thought. The likelihood is that he was the son of John Sutherland-4694 and Christy Sutherland-4695, as the Scottish Old Parish Registers show that they did have a son named George, born 1800. John and Christy and their family came to Red River in 1823, (4) however George did not accompany them at that time.

Note: George Sutherland has been assigned a new ID #18390.
